Viva Surgical Assessment & Coordination

Viva Surgical Assessment & Coordination helps adults in Doral before and after surgery. It is for people with a possible hernia or another surgical concern that is not an emergency.

About this program

It is also for people who need a health check before a planned surgery, or care after an operation. You can book an in-person visit at our Doral clinic. If you may have a hernia, a provider examines you and explains what they found.

We set up any tests you need and refer you to a surgeon when that is the right step. Before surgery, your provider reviews your health history and any heart or lung symptoms. We also look at long-term health problems like diabetes or high blood pressure.

We check every medicine and supplement you take. We share what we find with your surgery and anesthesia teams. Those teams make the final decisions, so this visit cannot promise a surgery date.

After surgery, we check on your healing, your long-term health, and your medicines. If something does not look right, we contact your surgical team.

Frequently asked questions

What is a preoperative evaluation?

It is a visit before a planned surgery to review your health. Your provider checks your history, heart and lung symptoms, ongoing conditions, and medicines, and coordinates tests your surgeon requests. The findings and recommendations go to your surgical and anesthesia teams, who decide whether and when the surgery goes ahead.

Is this the same as surgical clearance?

Many surgeons call it clearance. We call it a preoperative evaluation, because the visit gives your surgical team information and recommendations; it does not approve the surgery by itself. Sometimes the visit finds something that should be addressed first, such as very high blood pressure or blood sugar, and that can move a planned date.

When should I schedule my preoperative visit?

Ask your surgeon's office for their timeline. Many teams want the visit a few weeks before surgery so there is time for tests and adjustments. Bring the surgeon's request form, the date and type of surgery, your medication and supplement list, and any recent test results so your provider can complete the review.

Should I stop my medicines before surgery?

Do not stop any medicine on your own. Some medicines, such as blood thinners, diabetes medicines, and certain supplements, may need changes before surgery, while others should continue. Your provider reviews each one, agrees on a plan with your surgical and anesthesia teams, and gives you clear written instructions to follow.

I think I have a hernia. What happens at the visit?

Your provider asks about the bulge and your symptoms and examines the area, sometimes while you stand or cough. If needed, an ultrasound or other imaging is coordinated with an outside center. If a hernia is likely, we refer you to a surgeon to discuss options. Some hernias are watched and others are repaired; the surgeon decides that with you.

Can Viva help after my surgery?

Yes. After surgery, we can see you for primary-care follow-up: checking how you are recovering, managing blood pressure, blood sugar, and other ongoing conditions, and updating your medication list. Questions about the operation and wound decisions stay with your surgical team, and we contact them quickly if something looks wrong.

Urgent symptoms

  • A hernia or bulge that turns hard, very painful, red, or dark, or cannot be pushed back in
  • A hernia with nausea, vomiting, or a swollen belly
  • Chest pain or sudden shortness of breath before or after surgery
  • Fever with spreading redness, pus, or a wound that opens after surgery
  • New calf pain or swelling after surgery
  • For any of these, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Call 911 for a life-threatening emergency.

When we refer

This program does not perform surgery. Your surgeon and anesthesia team make the final decisions about surgery, timing, and anesthesia, and no visit here can promise that surgery will be approved or avoided. A hernia that turns hard, painful, or discolored, or any urgent surgical problem, needs emergency care rather than a routine appointment. Possible complications after surgery go to your surgical team right away.
